NEBOSH has changed the National General Certificate course syllabus and for the better!

As we know the NEBOSH National General Certificate is one of the UK’s most popular health and safety qualifications. Offering an overview of the core aspects of occupational health and safety, this new course will provide an excellent platform for individuals who are looking to build upon their knowledge and skills and take their health and safety career forward. As one of the must have qualifications, it is estimated that 87% of UK employers request a NEBOSH qualification when recruiting for health and safety roles.

The course is still designed for managers, supervisors and employees who have health and safety responsibilities. The certificate will equip you with all you need to know about how to manage workplace risks effectively and the new syllabus effectively represents the role of a real-life health and safety practitioner in 2020.

The changes highlighted below have now made it even more accessible for people to complete the course which can only be a good thing going forward.

New course duration:

This course will take place over a 10 day period. This will also include the examination.

How the course is broken down:

The course will still be element based with slight tweaks to the course syllabus. The basis of the course is laid out in the following units.

What has changed?

The course will only be two units (NG1 & NG2). The content has also been restructured and updated to reflect modern day Health and Safety practices. This means that there is also a small reduction in the overall study hours meaning that the course is no longer spread over a 3 week period.

The major change is with the assessment; this means there is now only one exam and one practical assessment to be completed at the end of the course.

Unit NG1 is examined by a formal 2 hour written exam (replacing NGC1).

Unit NG2 is assessed by a practical assessment (this is a longer assessment than the previous GC 2 and GC3).

Once you have completed the course, you will be able to successfully carry out the following:

• Minimise workplace injuries and illness
• Confidently conduct risk assessments
• Understand UK health and safety legislation
• Develop and implement a detailed action plan in terms of health and safety risk management
• Manage and minimise workplace risks
• Support and develop your company’s health and safety culture

How is the course run?

This modern qualification combines different learning methods and interactive materials to provide you with an interesting and engaging experience. It focuses on the key health and safety skills that means you can instantly apply the knowledge you gain and add value to your business or organisation.

The course now only consists of 1 assessment and a practical assessment.

• NG 1 is assessed by a 2 hour written paper to assess what you know. This will cover elements 1 – 4.
• NG 2 is assessed by way of a practical risk assessment to assess what you can do. This will be completed in  your workplace and covers Elements 4 – 11 and also small areas of Elements 1 – 4.

Both assessments are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH. There is no change to this part of the course.

This qualification will still accepted by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), as well as the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) as per their membership criteria.

And finally, the NG 1 unit can now be used as the common unit for the NEBOSH Fire and NEBOSH Construction certificates.

From January 2020, we will be running courses from two locations in Andover and Aldershot.
