NEBOSH Fire Certificate syllabus

The qualification is a two unit qualification and is broken down into six elements:

Unit FSC1 – Fire Safety and Risk Management
  • Element 1: Managing fire safety
  • Element 2: Principles of fire and explosion
  • Element 3: Fuel, oxygen and ignition sources and
    control measures
  • Element 4: Fire protection in buildings
  • Element 5: Safety of people in the event of a fire
  • Element 6: Fire safety risk assessment
Unit FSC2 – Fire Risk Assessment

How is the Fire Certificate assessed?

  • Unit FSC1 is a taught unit assessed by of an Open Book Examination (OBE)  Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.
  • Unit FSC2 is assessed by an Fire Risk Assessment carried out in the delegate’s workplace.

The written practical has to be submitted to Southwest Health and Safety Training within 10 working days after of the FSC1 exam.

The assignment is then internally assessed and moderated by NEBOSH. It is the delegate’s responsibility to submit their written assessment within the timescale. Any assessments not returned by the deadline will result in the delegate failing this section of the course.

The examination for this qualification will take place once a quarter and the following dates are confirmed:

  • Wednesday 23 June 2021
  • Wednesday 22 September 2021
  • Wednesday 15 December 2021

The role of a first aider for mental health is to provide basic mental health support or be the first response to someone in need, usually in the workplace. The first aider for mental health is not clinically qualified to assess, diagnose or treat mental ill health but they will know the basic tools to listen to individuals who require first response support for their mental health.

This includes recognising mental ill health in self and others, supporting mental wellbeing in the workplace, understanding how to promote a wellness culture in the workplace and the importance of resilience and self-care for first aiders for mental health.

Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety

Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety

The NVQ Diploma Level 6 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is a vocational health and safety qualification, that does not require classroom attendance.

As this is a level 6 qualification, a level of existing formal health and safety knowledge is strongly recommended. Ideally, you will already have passed a Level 3 health and safety qualification such as a NEBOSH General Certificate.

Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Syllabus

You are assessed by a range of methods such as evidence that is generated from the workplace, professional discussions, witness testimonials, observations and written questions. Assessors carry out assessment calls via ZOOM throughout the process.

To achieve this full Level 6 NVQ health and safety qualification, you must demonstrate your competency, knowledge and understanding by completing the ten mandatory units.

How is the Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety course assessed?

This qualification is competence-based. Candidates must demonstrate the level of competence described in the units. Assessment is the process of measuring a candidate’s skill, knowledge and understanding against the standards set in the qualification.

Learners will have to provide evidence that will then be signed off and approved by an assessor. Once learners have fulfilled all of the requirements set by ProQual, one of our internal verifiers will assess the work and sign it off as complete.

Delegates will then be awarded the qualification.

Candidates need to have completed all elements of the qualification to gain the full qualification.


How long does it take to complete the Health and Safety diploma level 6 course?

  • 12 – 18 months

As this qualification revolves around you, the time it takes to complete the units and achieve it depends primarily upon you.

How is the Level 3 Award in Education and Training assessed?

Learners must complete:

  • Three written assignments that are completed via our online portal
  • One micro-teaching session (which can be submitted as a recorded video) This needs to be a minimum of 10 minutes long

How long does it take to complete the course?

Total Qualification Time for this qualification is 120 hours. This is an estimate of the total length of time it is expected that a learner will typically take to achieve and demonstrate the level of attainment necessary for the award of the qualification i.e. to achieve all learning outcomes.

Total Qualification Time is comprised of GLH and an estimate of the number of hours a learner is likely to spend in preparation, study or any other learning including assessment, which takes place as directed by, but not under the supervision of a lecturer, supervisor or tutor. The credit value, where given for a qualification is determined by TQT, as one credit corresponds to 10 hours of learning.


Guided Learning Hours

Guided Learning Hours for this qualification is 48. These hours are made up of all real-time contact time, guidance or supervision of a learner by a lecturer, supervisor, tutor, trainer or other appropriate provider of education or training.

What funding is available for the Level 3 Award in Education and Training?

SLC Funding

Members of the Armed Forces are able to use their Standard Learning Credits (SLC) to fund up to 80% of the course cost up to £175.

 You are required and will be asked to submit a copy of identification documents such as a passport or driving license.
