Course Information

First Aid at Work | Classroom

The objective of this qualification is to support learners in becoming first aiders in the workplace. The content of the qualification meets the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements for training first aiders in those organisations that have identified that staff need to be trained to this level within their first-aid needs assessment.

The qualification covers knowledge such as the roles and responsibilities of the first aider, how to assess an incident and recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness. The qualification also covers first aid skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and assisting a casualty who is suffering from major injury and illness such as chest injuries, spinal injuries and anaphylaxis.

In line with guidance provided by the HSE, the qualification supports/approves workplace first aiders for a period of 3 years, after which point learners will need to retake the course. Therefore, the qualification is valid for three years from the date of award. In addition to this, it is recommended that learners refresh their knowledge annually.

We make sure that our courses are both informative and fun, and delegates are actively encouraged to contribute (we don’t like death by PowerPoint any more than the next), and our student feedback indicates we’re doing it right.

The qualification is divided into two units:

  • Emergency First Aid in the Workplace
  • Recognition and Management of Illness and Injury in the Workplace

Testimonials

Scott Townley, First Aid at Work delegate

"Southwest Health and Safety was recommended by a friend, still serving within our HM Forces. I was searching for a professional company to help me gain health and safety qualifications and also with my transition from Military to Civilian Street. I spent 2 separate weeks completing IOSH Managing Safely and Level 3 First Aid at Work. Southwest Health and Safety provided excellent facilities for both courses and also the instruction was very professional with both classroom and practical aspects throughout. Both instructors were excellent with their subject knowledge and approach towards both courses. Southwest Health and Safety is highly recommended for a training provider and will be there 100% all of the way to accommodate your training needs, and advise where necessary. The company will also help with military, wanting to use Standard Learning Credits towards qualifications. 10 out of 10 for this Company and look forward to my next course with them."
